Dental Health

Dentistry (like all forms of medicine) has evolved over the years and we know now that there is more to the mouth than just controlling cavities and controlling diet. We now understand that each tooth has an anatomy that is perfect to work in its environment. Restorations must be done with the entire mouth and body in mind so as to allow the continuous flow of good health the organs and systems affected by that tooth. This a is a form of “biological dentistry”.

Please note: When you look at the tooth chart, you are looking into a person's mouth with the jaws open. You're facing the person, so their upper right jaw will be on the left of this image.

Things to consider about your dental health and your dental health team are:

  • Your team should take the time to work with you and explain options for the best dental health.

  • A program for great dental hygiene

  • Review of your own dental brushing and flossing habits

  • Deep tissue cleaning in problematic areas

  • Restorations with materials that work with your body chemistry (i.e. composite fillings not amalgam)

  • Assessment of your bite in relationship to your total mouth and jaw including your TMJ

  • Assessment of trauma and stress factors on your mouth

In today’s lifestyle, be aware that your teeth could be receiving the brunt of your stress. Simple bite guards may be an answer – check with your dentist to get one to fit your mouth (as a poorly fitting guard can create its own stress on the jaw).
