Healthy Fish to Eat

This month's question is "My nutritional consultant wants me to eat more protein in my diet.
What fish is safe to eat?"

In today’s dilemma of what to eat for protein, more of us are trying to find healthy fish. We are surprised to find so much fish available and at such reasonable prices. But there seems to be a hidden agenda with this huge fish industry.

Here is my “be aware list”:

·       Avoid “farm-raised” fish. There are corporations all over the world investing in “Fish Farming.” And what a surprise – it is not just farm-raised salmon anymore. Many different varieties of fish are now being farmed, because there was a good market for fish throughout all seasons all over the world. Industrial fish farms will raise the same questions that any of our feedlots on land raise. Any good farmer knows that the livestock
(fish, fowl, or cattle) has a need to free range or roam. It is part of nature.
Roaming creates contentment, invigorates the life, helps detox the body, and allows
life to be one with living nature. In captivity, fish waste becomes a problem for the other sea creatures by generating an abundance of bacteria. Free-swimming fish spread their waste over much larger areas, reducing the parasites and disease over that of those captive fish in farms. Man does not seem to understand that nature has the best plan!

·       Mercury has also become a problem in fish. Cold-water fish originally were more resistant to toxins in the ocean waters. Now, even cold-water fish are showing traces of Mercury. We know for a fact that Mercury in the human body impairs the memory, decreases concentration, impairs vision and causes attention deficit disorders.

·       Pesticides such as DDT, PCBs, and dioxin are also being found in tested fish. These are dangerous chemicals being dumped into our waters by industry. These
chemicals have been linked to cancers, fetal damage and nervous system stress.

My suggestion is – Know your fish market or vendor! Ask questions about their sources and choose your fish carefully. The cheaper fish is usually farm-raised and available in mass quantities. Look for “wild” salmon just like you look for free-range eggs!

Don’t eat fish every day – vary it up with free-range chicken, eggs, organic dairy products,
whey protein drinks, high-quality beef like Angus or small farm-raised beef. Here are some
good sources for information about meat, fish and chicken:

Also remember, local is great – if you can find it. Check out your local health food stores like Whole Foods, Central Market, and HEB. Talk to your store managers! Tell them what it is that you want. Once you have found your choice fish, meat or chicken – prepare it with love, bless it, and enjoy it!

Once again, these are my personal opinions from my practice and research. Thank you for your interest.
