Real Food

This month’s question: “What is all the hype about 'Real Food'?”

The days of lovingly selecting a beautiful piece of fruit, caressing it as your nose embraces a decadent aroma that whirls your taste buds into ecstasy is not something most of us remember.
In a quest for both mass production and financial gain, food has been synthetically modified, engineered, pumped full of hormones and chemicals, after which it travels across nations and countries to finally be purchased by consumers. Not only the smell elusive, but also the taste.

Food is a “life force energy” that is to be consumed to build, rebuild, replace, and
restore the body.

A simple story will explain. An airplane manufacturer, Thomas, was offered a contract to build the safest and best airplane ever available. He would also be asked to maintain this craft. This plane would carry the most precious cargo he could imagine. The budget was gracious and building time was very adequate. Did Thomas seek out the best of everything for this project – or did he fuel his project with parts and supplies from the local airplane junkyard to increase his profit margins? Thomas would be the only one ever to know. If he skimped on building – he could improve it while he maintained it – yes? With the unveiling of this safe aircraft, Thomas was told that this plane was going to be donated to carry “at risk” newborn babies and mothers from hospitals in less fortunate countries to hospitals with special care infant units.

As a special thank you for finishing the project timely and in budget, Thomas’ daughter (a missionary in South Africa) would be flown back to the United States within days, where she would deliver her first baby. His daughter had not told him of the pregnancy because this new grandchild would be a “high risk” delivery. How did Thomas react? Was he filled with joy
knowing he had done his best and would now see his grandchild? Or was his mind racing with thoughts of how to better protect his grandchild?

You are constantly building and maintaining yourself. You are building and maintaining the best body you canafter all, you live there. Will you use foods that burst with life, fragrance, aroma, and flavor – or something quick, convenient, and flavorless? You are what you eat!

The human body is an amazing and precise piece of equipment. Given what it needs, it can maintain, heal, and defend itself from most all forms of sickness and disease. Whole food vitamins and supplements properly taken can assist in the healthy maintenance of the body. The best goal is to find real foods, grown with high standards and integrity, and prepare them in a healthy manner on a daily basis. If you want peak performance from your body – give it the best!

Food and diet is about balance! The definition of a balanced diet is the correct ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Also, you require the right balance of minerals, vitamins, essential fats, essential amino acids, and fiber. A truly optimal diet will eliminate or limit the body’s exposure to harmful or toxic substances, food additives, and chemicals. It is about quality – NOT quantity!

If I could have one wish for everyone reading this article – it would be to change your eating habits. Each change will allow you to feel better. Here are some simple starters:

·         Replace refined sugars with fruit, molasses, turbinado sugar, date sugar, or Stevia.

·         Avoid chemical sweeteners like NutraSweet, saccharin, Splenda. Even Splenda, though it is made from sugar, is chemically altered and very questionable. (For more information on Splenda, please check out http://www.womentowomen.com/nutritionandweightloss/splenda.asp)

·         Replace refined flour products with whole grain products.

·         Replace hydrogenated oils with non-hydrogenated spreads like natural nut butters, true butter, coconut or olive oil.

·         As a general rule, if a product contains more than three chemicals listed on the label –
DO NOT buy it. Processed foods can contain up to thirty (30) chemicals such as preservatives, colors, flavors, conditioners, and mold retardants. Most common
chemicals you should avoid are MSG, sodium benzoate, saccharin, aspartame, nitrates, and sulfites. These have all been show to be harmful and some even cancer causing.

·         Avoid fast foods.

·         Avoid soy. See this article for facts about soy!

These are my personal opinions and clinical observations. I truly wish you only wellness.
