What is Diatomaceous Earth and how is it considered a “supplement”?

DE is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by Diatoms (one celled plants). It comes from several different sources – fresh and salt water. It also comes in with two different grades – food grade and non-food grade.

Non- food grade is used for filtration of swimming pools, some pest control, as an abrasive, as an absorbing compound and as a thermal insulator.

Food grade is a great source for Silica as an important mineral as well as many other trace minerals required by the body. Food-grade DE is safe and non-toxic. One Tablespoon can be taken in juice, water, applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal or shakes. It has many uses:

  • The shell particles are just sharp enough to destroy parasites without any harm to people or animals when taken internally.

  • Stimulates the metabolism

  • Provides Silica to sore joints

  • Lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol

  • Lowers high blood pressure

  • Helps stabilize blood sugars

  • Provides nutrients to the hair, nails, and skin for strength and health

  • Cleanses the digestive track

  • Aids in weight loss

  • Helps harden the enamel of teeth while fighting decay

  • Adds strength to bones and nails

  • Fades age spots on the skin

  • Assists in healing rashes, boils, warts and eczemas

DE is also used for organic insect control. No matter what grade you must be careful not to inhale it or allow it to get into the eyes of either you or your pets. I prefer to always use the food-grade because it is a little finer and safe if your pets or animals should choose to lick it.

  • It is great for dusting the garden, flowers, plants or trees –
    especially instead of hazardous chemicals

  • Pour it on ant hills – but it will take up to several hours to kill them –
even pour it down into the hill

  • Use around kennel areas

  • Use on the coat of dogs and cats in very small amounts down back and brush into coat. Avoid eye areas.

  • Add to pet food each day for worm and parasite control

  • Great for pet skin and coats when added to pet food

  • Use on birds for lice and mite control

I personally like to take DE daily – I have more energy, better digestion and see a difference in my skin and joints. It is inexpensive and very useful – including the fact that it discourages the giant grasshoppers from my hibiscus trees.
