What is Diatomaceous Earth and how is it considered a “supplement”? DE is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by Diatoms (one celled plants). It comes from several different sources – fresh and salt water. It also comes in with two different grades – food grade and non-food grade. Non- food grade is used for filtration of swimming pools, some pest control, as an abrasive, as an absorbing compound and as a thermal insulator. Food grade is a great source for Silica as an important mineral as well as many other trace minerals required by the body. Food-grade DE is safe and non-toxic. One Tablespoon can be taken in juice, water, applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal or shakes. It has many uses:
DE is also used for organic insect control. No matter what grade you must be careful not to inhale it or allow it to get into the eyes of either you or your pets. I prefer to always use the food-grade because it is a little finer and safe if your pets or animals should choose to lick it.
I personally like to take DE daily – I have more energy, better digestion and see a difference in my skin and joints. It is inexpensive and very useful – including the fact that it discourages the giant grasshoppers from my hibiscus trees. — Joan © 2010 Joan Goodman
